Jami applied her Chemistry degree from Carleton College to biology research for several years, where gene expression microarrays piqued her interest in Big Data.

Shortly afterwards, she picked up a MySQL book and started presenting web site visitors with podcast recommendations, and she was hooked. Since then, she’s used many of the major APIs to make music playlists, improve search, and aggregate social media information.

She also loves nearly everything about Portland, from mutant bikes to Farmer’s Markets to microbrews.

Visual Design

Sam  believes that the best ideas deserve the best visual representations, and that data visualization is an excellent way to inform the public in an honest and rational way.

Sam uses his BA in Design and New Media from Western Washington University to help ensure that worthwhile visual stories continue to be told in support of the causes that need them the most.

At home Sam is rarely found without a stringed instrument in hand, and he dreams of one day joining up with a traveling bluegrass band.

Data Design / Technical Design

Mark’s earliest creative projects were built with Legos, and as a programmer he finds the same satisfaction in giving form to an imagined construct. He loves learning the workings (and failings) of interconnected systems, and is fascinated by the way code can feel elegant and stylish.

Raised by a physicist and an art critic, he likes exploring the space between disciplines where diverse ideas mingle to create new pockets of knowledge. His interests include creative coding, interactive digital art, and literate programming. Offline, Mark enjoys literature and soccer.

Katie Hill

Project Design

With a background in publication design and typographic infatuation, Katie has a simultaneous passion for complex systems and pixel-perfect details. Above all, she loves working with information. Her best days are when she has too much content to read, demanding a patient hand and insightful eye. More often than not, you can find her surrounded by 11x17s filled with hand-drawn concept maps and information outlines.

Katie is a recent transplant from Raleigh, NC, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from NC State University’s College of Design. She focused her education towards Sociology and Social Justice, and our “do good with data” mantra was a strong motivator for her 2,851 mile drive across the continental United States.

From endangered species, to politics, to social justice, it is our goal to engage the public and deliver a message of responsibility and action.
